Atlas Copco in pole position in the mineral exploration race

Atlas Copco in pole position in the mineral exploration race

Worldwide growth in mineral exploration has put Atlas Copco in pole position with its strong focus on exploration technique and an impressive portfolio of innovative products. Atlas Copco Craelius, the Group's division for exploration drilling and ground engineering, is reporting record figures for 2006 thanks to the global boom in exploration.

The division is headquartered in Märsta, Sweden, and with manufacturing facilities in North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. All the plants are currently running at full capacity and forecasts show that the trend will continue, at least for the first half of 2007.

Hans Lidén, divisional President, attributes this strong growth to: "Atlas Copco's long-term dedication to the business of exploration and our investment in product innovation which has resulted in one of the strongest product ranges in the market today."

Lidén adds that the outlook is also positive for the division's ground engineering sector, which is showing more stable and consistent growth.

Innovation in exploration

Innovation has been the overriding mission for the Atlas Copco Craelius division since the start of the new millennium and today these efforts are paying off with rapid expansion and modernization of the exploration drilling product range.

Another key development is in surface core drilling applications where Atlas Copco's Christensen surface drilling rigs have received considerable market appreciation for their robust and reliable design.

A complete Christensen range in place

Shortly after it was launched two years ago, the new Christensen CS14 became a standard solution for exploration in remote areas where mechanical reliability is crucial.

Now the latest addition to the Christensen range, the Christensen CS10, has brought a new measure of innovation to the light equipment segment. Rated slightly over 1000 metres vertical depth in B size, 760 metres in N size, 460 metres H size and 300 metres P size wireline coring, the CS10 is designed to reduce the total weight of the equipment without compromising productivity or performance. Mounted on a single-axle trailer, the rig can be disassembled in modules for helicopter transportation.

The new Diamec U4 completes the Diamec range

The new Diamec U4, diamond core drilling rig is a typical case. This unit, launched at last year's PDAC exhibition (Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada) in Toronto, Ontario, reaffirms the Diamec's leadership status in exploration and definition drilling, mainly in underground mining.

The unit offers an innovative, compact, hollow spindle rotation unit, featuring fewer components for reduced maintenance costs. A boom, derived from the experiences gained with the larger Diamec U6, enables easy and fast positioning. A telescopic hydraulic cylinder replaces chains or steel ropes on the feed, reducing wear and assuring smoother feeding force. This enhances penetration rates and diamond bit life.

Diamec U4 is available both with a manual control system, and with the more sophisticated APC control system (Automatic Performance Control). The APC system makes it a true one-man operating rig that improves the drilling process, increases bit life and saves money for the owner. Fully automatic or pilot-controlled, the Diamec U4 is also expected to radically improve the drilling process in grouting operations in dam projects.

Diamec U4 is able to core drill in A, B and N size and, with A size, offers a depth capacity of more than 500 metres.

Atlas Copco strengthens its leading role in rock reinforcement

Märsta, Sweden, September 22, 2006

Worldwide growth in mining activities in combination with an increased presence in civil engineering has put Atlas Copco in pole position with its strong focus on rock and soil reinforcement. The company's product portfolio, characterized by a wide range of rock bolts and self-drilling anchors, is designed to meet every ground engineering challenge.

Atlas Copco Craelius, the Group's division for exploration drilling and ground engineering, is reporting record figures for 2006, thanks to the global boom in exploration and strong sales of equipment for ground engineering.

The division is headquartered in Märsta, Sweden, and with manufacturing facilities in North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. All the plants are currently running at full capacity and forecasts show that the trend will continue, at least for the first half of 2007. The outlook is especially positive for the division's ground engineering sector which is showing more stable, consistent growth.

Hans Lidén, divisional President, attributes this strong growth to: "Atlas Copco's long-term dedication to the business and our investment in quality, which has resulted in the most reliable and well-reputed rock and soil reinforcement products. Furthermore, our customers highly appreciate the constant support given by our own customer centers, which provide complete solutions for a large variety of applications, from deep hard rock mining to tunnelling and slope stabilization."

Quality & Reliability

Quality and product reliability has been the overriding mission for the Atlas Copco Craelius division since the start of the new millennium, and these efforts are today paying off with a rapid expansion of the product range. Swellex rock bolts, for example, are unique in the field of rock reinforcement and ground engineering. High pressure water is used to expand the bolt in the hole, a method that has helped Swellex become the bolt of choice at many mine and tunnel worksites worldwide.

To cope with the increasing demand, a new production plant is to be established in North Bay, Canada, where Atlas Copco is already established with a factory specialized in drilling rods, ITH tools and diamond bits for mineral exploration. Having excellent transportation and logistics facilities, North Bay is strategically located to serve the North American mining industry.

The new Swellex plant will have the capacity to manufacture one million bolts per year, mainly for the mining markets of Canada and the USA. As a result, Swellex will not only expand its market penetration but also its scope, from the traditional field of gold mining such as Val d’Or in Quebec and the Elko region of Nevada, into new application areas such as the diamond mines of the Northern Territories.

Since 2002, MAI self-drilling anchors have been integrated into the Atlas Copco rock reinforcement package of solutions. Particularly useful in soft, unstable formations, MAI SDAs have gained the confidence of customers working in a large variety of applications and are now distributed world-wide. In order to satisfy the constantly increasing demand, a third production line is also being set up to increase the production capacity for these SDAs.

In addition to the present two production lines, this new line is located in Feistritz/Drau, Austria. It is estimated that the company’s present capacity will expand by some 30 percent in order to meet the growing needs of the worldwide tunnelling and ground engineering market.

The new plant is dedicated to large diameter products (from 38 mm up to the new 150 mm self-drilling micro pile). This will increase the range of products, expanding into the large diameter self-drilling micropiles – an increasingly appreciated solution for speeding up productivity in foundation work and stability enhancement projects.

Atlas Copco to increase manufacturing capacity in India

Atlas Copco is to expand its manufacturing facilities in Nasik and Pune, India. The investment, made to meet an increasing demand, has a value of MSEK 44 (MEUR 4.7). The project is expected to be completed during the second quarter of 2007.

Atlas Copco is concentrating its production of construction and mining equipment to one site in Nasik, where it is investing in new assembly units for surface drilling rigs and in a modernization of the hand-held construction tools facility. In Pune, investments are for the modernization of the compressor production facility, which will increase capacity. The project is an important step in the strategy to meet an anticipated increase in demand. Revenues for Atlas Copco (India) Ltd., for the 12 months to June 30, 2005, were BINR 5.03 (approximately MSEK 890) and have almost doubled in the last two years.

Phillip Davidson, Managing Director of Atlas Copco (India) Ltd, comments on the investment: “The steps we are taking to increase the capacity for construction and mining equipment are required both to meet an increase in demand and to enable a full integration of the units we acquired during 2004. At the same time, we will also capture additional synergies, by rationalizing our production of hand-held tools to one site in Nasik.” During 2004, Atlas Copco acquired operations in India from Ingersoll-Rand, which today are part of the Atlas Copco Drilling Solutions division.

The Indian compressor operation has grown significantly over the last two years.“We foresee a period of sustained industrial growth and are adjusting our capacity to meet demand. By concentrating all compressor operations to Pune we will both improve our logistics process and the production flow.”

The new facilities in Pune will become operational from mid 2006. The Nasik plant is scheduled to be fully operational during the second quarter of 2007.

Atlas Copco Unveils New Product At PDAC

Atlas Copco Unveils New Product At PDAC

Atlas Copco unveiled two major product advancements at the Prospectors and Developers Annual Convention (PDAC) in Toronto, Canada in March.

On display was the company’s powerful new Diamec U8 core drilling rig. Newly arrived from the Atlas Copco manufacturing facility in Sweden, the U8 combines the latest in proven technology for wireline core drilling.

The Diamec U8 is designed for deep hole drilling both on surface or underground and is rated to a depth of 1500 metres (N size rods). It comes equipped with either an Automated Performance Control panel (APC) or the proven Pilot Hydraulic Control system (PHC).

Other design highlights include its integral skid and hydraulic feed frame for 360º drilling, improved safety and ergonomics features, automated rod handling, and more powerful, energy efficient power units, either electric or diesel powered depending on the application.

Atlas Copco also had the PDAC in a buzz over the much anticipated launch of its new Torpedo impregnated coring bit, the V-13. With a 13mm impregnation, field tests have shown the V-13 to be more productive and longer lasting in medium to very hard rock, both competent and broken.

Atlas Copco Exploration Products Manager Jeff Hagar says both product unveilings were extremely well received. “The Diamec U8 is the latest addition to Atlas Copco Diamec line of underground drills. The U8 has the largest capacity and is the most powerful underground drill in the industry. Customers were keenly interested in its deep hole capability and the fact that it is as productive on surface as it is underground”

Hagar says the design of the Torpedo V-13 also pushed the limits of engineering calling it a testament to the company’s commitment to exceed customer expectations.

“This new bit represents more than an incremental improvement. Rather it combines innovation in design, materials and the manufacturing process to achieve a level of productivity that was previously unattainable.”

During a presentation on the V-13, Atlas Copco held a draw and awarded an American drilling contractor, Ruen Drilling with 1,500 metres worth of free drilling Hobic bits.
